How to prepare for uni during the summer break

Students walking across Bush Court

High school is done and dusted and it’s time to enjoy the summer break.

Whether you’re gearing up for a road trip, hanging out with friends, or just enjoying the time off at home, we’ve got five ways to use your spare time and get ready for uni.

1. Get saving

Before it’s time to get stuck into the books, start saving some cash with a casual or part time job. Working on the side is a great way to start building your savings and manage a budget. By the time uni rolls around, being smart with your savings comes down to the way you spend your money, and not just how much you have.

Learn tips and tricks on how you can save money to live large on a small budget.

2. Get organised

Whether you prefer to study in your room, in the kitchen, or outside in the sun, start prepping a space that works for you. Consider the things you’ll need like stationary, notebooks, and a wall planner or diary to make sure you’ve got everything you need. Once you’ve sussed out your unit materials and textbooks, check out The Murdoch Bookshop located on campus or the Murdoch Guild Second Hand Bookshop for all your study needs.

Not sure about the difference between a major and a minor, or what WIL stands for? Get familiar with uni lingo to understand common terms, phrases, and acronyms you’re likely to come across at uni.

3. Get support

Know where to find help if you need it. We are fortunate to have a range of student support services available on campus, including the myMurdoch Advice locations and the Student Centre.

There are three myMurdoch Advice locations you can visit on campus, or you can jump online to chat with a Student Advisor. Get support and advice on everything from learning and study, mentoring, medical and counselling services, disability services, and more.

If you’re keen to know more about assisted study, check out the Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) to see how you can get involved in study groups, or get in touch with a Peer Academic Coach (PAC) to organise a free and personalised 20-minute consultation (on-campus or online).

Read everything you need to know about our Student Services.

4. Get there

Murdoch is easier to get to than you think. Did you know we are only 15 minutes from the city by train, and a five-minute walk from Murdoch Train Station to our Perth campus? If you’re catching public transport, you can catch one of 12 buses to campus.

If you plan on driving to uni, make sure to get your parking permit sorted to be able to park in one of the 12 car parks on campus. If you’re riding to uni, there are 14 personal lockers available to use, 90 bike compounds, and 300 bike racks to take advantage of.

Find the best way to get to campus and start planning your journey here.

5. Get excited!

Uni is all about learning new things, meeting new people, and challenging yourself to think differently. You’ll get to meet like-minded people with similar interests and push yourself out of your comfort zone in a supportive environment.

See how you can get involved in campus activities to make the most of uni life through events and opportunities such as Guild festival daysvolunteering opportunities, and clubs and societies.
