MMFS Futures Days: Inspiring Year 11 Students
A huge success with hands-on biomedical, laboratory medicine and forensic lab activities
Over two incredible days, the MMFS Futures program welcomed more than 225 Year 11/12 students from nine schools to participate in interactive biomed, lab medicine, and forensic science workshops at Murdoch University. This event proved to be a resounding success, showcasing the exciting future of biomedical and forensic sciences while fostering engagement among students and educators alike.
The schools involved included Emmanuel Catholic College, Fremantle College, Lumen Christi College, Melville SHS, South Coast Baptist College, St Brigid’s College, Baldivis Secondary College, Corpus Christi College, and Lake Joondalup Baptist College. Seven of these schools were cluster priority schools, highlighting the program’s outreach and impact.
The workshops offered students the opportunity to delve into hands-on activities, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm while connecting them with MMFS academics and professional technical staff. Special thanks go to Louisa Ivey, as well as a phenomenal team of specialist student ambassadors who played an instrumental role in the success of the program. Their dedication was complemented by the support of technical and academic teams from across MMFS.
Louisa, who led the organisation of the event, described the experience as deeply rewarding, saying, “I have an enormous smile that I can’t get off my face because of just how well the two days have gone.” She expressed gratitude to everyone involved, including academics, lab technicians, and the sensational student ambassadors who demonstrated the best of MMFS at Murdoch University.
Standout contributors included Dr Shu Hui Koh, Dr Julie Ardley, Prof Andrew Currie, Dr Shane Colley, Dr John Coumbaros, Dr Brendan C., Ashleigh Peck, Dr Amanda Ash, Neil Andrewartha, Chelsea Back, Tamara Hourani, Dr Kim Rice, A/Prof Ravi Tiwari, Angelica Nguyen, and David G., as well as and A/Prof Garth Maker, who provided an inspiring course introduction each morning.
These Futures Days are an excellent model for high-impact engagement, and the program's success highlights the need for continued focus on such events to build meaningful connections with schools. Here's to many more futures-inspired collaborations that empower and inspire the next generation of scientists!
Sincere thanks to all involved!
