Kyanna standing on Murdoch campus

The Boordawan Movement is a powerful initiative supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students to thrive academically while remaining deeply connected to culture and community.

It provides the resources, support and environment for students to succeed in both higher education and cultural responsibility by blending academic mentoring, cultural leadership and practical support.

Boordawan means “future” in Noongar, reflecting our vision to grow strong, culturally grounded graduates who lead with confidence, purpose and integrity.

About our artwork

Boordawan Movement by Jordan Ah Chee

This design tells the story of the student journey. The rivers coming together and meeting in the middle represent the flow of students coming in. The lines are the stories and knowledge they bring with them. They are supported and nurtured in the centre.

Once they are ready, they continue on their journey and follow the rivers out again. The small circles represent the 14 Noongar nations of the southwest of WA. Around the outside are symbols for people and community, representing support networks of teachers, family and Elders.

Together, it appears like the sun or Ngangk, which also means mother, and represents the support and nurturing of those that come into the centre.

Pillars of support

At Murdoch University, we are proud to walk alongside community as we build pathways for the next generation of Aboriginal leaders to thrive. The Boordawan Movement is a statement of belief in those leaders and supports them in three essential areas:
Students are connected with dedicated support to guide and inspire them through their studies. Mentors and academic opportunities help them achieve strong academic outcomes, navigate challenges, and build confidence in their capabilities.
The program honours the wisdom of Elders and community leaders by embedding cultural values into every aspect of student development. Funding supports students to lead in ways that reflect their identity, community responsibilities, and lived experiences with the guidance of Elders and cultural knowledge.
Financial assistance, subsidies and scholarships are provided to Boordawan recipients to reduce financial pressure and ensure that students can focus fully on their personal, academic, and professional growth.
