Celebrating MMFS Excellence: 2025 Staff Awards Shine a Light on Outstanding Achievements
Outstanding Staff Recognised Across Research, Teaching and Student Support
The School of Medical, Molecular & Forensic Sciences (MMFS) has once again proven itself a powerhouse of excellence, with three of our dedicated academics receiving prestigious 2025 Staff Awards as announced by the Vice-Chancellor yesterday.
Congratulations to Dr Shu Hui Koh, Associate Professor Garth Maker, and Associate Professor Natalie Warburton! These awards are a testament to their unwavering commitment, long-standing contributions, and the vibrant, supportive culture that defines MMFS.
Meet Our 2025 Award Recipients
Excellence in Postgraduate Research Supervision - A/Prof Garth Maker
A/Prof Maker, a leader in Biochemistry and toxicology, has been recognised for his extraordinary dedication to supervising higher degree by research (HDR) students. Since 2012, he’s guided 17 PhD and six Master’s by Research students to completion, fostering a respectful and supportive environment. Garth’s supervision philosophy centres on helping students publish during their studies, boosting their future opportunities. Of his 65 published papers, an impressive 53 feature at least one HDR student as a co-author—a clear reflection of his commitment to collaborative learning and research excellence.
Excellence in Enhancing Student Learning Citation - Dr Shu Hui Koh
As a lecturer in Cell Biology, Dr Koh is passionate about inspiring the next generation of scientists. Her research-driven approach to teaching aims to make science accessible, engaging and inclusive—especially for first-year students. Through her leadership in active learning and curriculum enhancement, Dr Koh has significantly improved student engagement and outcomes, ensuring equitable opportunities for all.
Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching - A/Prof Natalie Warburton
A/Prof Warburton, renowned for her expertise in comparative and evolutionary anatomy, is dedicated to sparking curiosity and critical thinking in her students. Her innovative teaching blends theory with hands-on practice, making science come alive both in and out of the classroom. Natalie’s enthusiasm for animal anatomy and evolution, together with her commitment to inclusive education and student mentorship, has made her a wonderful role model within the MMFS academic community.
