Research initiative: Applied sport and exercise science
Our focus on understanding and enhancing human performance through cutting-edge research in exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, and biomechanics is world leading.

Our work includes quantifying the movement and physiological demands of athletes to inform training and performance strategies, investigating environmental stressors such as heat and hypoxia to optimise adaptation and performance outcomes, and developing resistance training and blood flow restriction methods to enhance muscle size, strength, and rehabilitation. We also explore the physiological and neuromuscular mechanisms underpinning adaptation to exercise training, providing new insights into how the body responds and adapts to training stimuli.

We work closely with high-performance sporting organisations such as Hockey Australia, the WA Institute of Sport, and WA Football League clubs to apply our findings in real-world settings.

Our research has been supported by competitive research grants and has informed best-practice guidelines within the Australian high-performance sport sector, ensuring practical impact beyond the lab. By integrating applied research with industry partnerships, we strive to enhance athletic performance, injury prevention, and long-term athlete development.
