Behind the Scenes of Elite Cricket Guest Speakers

Murdoch University recently hosted an exclusive event, “Behind the Scenes of Elite Cricket Preparation,” bringing together leading professionals in sport science, coaching, and psychology to share their expertise with students and the wider community.

Held at Boola Katitjin, the evening featured presentations and Q&A sessions with Peter Sim, Physical Preparation Coach for the England Men’s Cricket Team; Toby Horak, Sport Science and Sports Medicine Manager at the WACA; and Mat Burgin, performance psychologist with the West Coast Eagles. Attendees gained valuable insights into the physical, psychological, and developmental aspects of preparing athletes for the highest levels of competition.

The event highlighted the importance of holistic athlete development, with speakers discussing topics ranging from injury prevention and training enjoyment to the psychological strategies that underpin elite performance. Peter Sim shared his experiences from international cricket, emphasising the balance between rigorous training and maintaining athlete motivation. Toby Horak addressed the challenges faced by young bowlers and their parents, offering practical advice for managing workloads and fostering resilience. Mat Burgin provided perspectives on mindset and the “third space,” exploring how mental skills can be developed both on and off the field.

In addition to expert talks, the evening included interactive elements such as a group stretch inspired by cricket legend Merv Hughes and the screening of the Scorchers Diploma video, showcasing Murdoch’s partnership with the Perth Scorchers Institute of Sport Business. The event concluded with a panel discussion, certificate presentations to practicum supervisors—including Anthony Brideson of Levity Exercise Physiology and Rehabilitation—and networking opportunities, reinforcing Murdoch University’s commitment to supporting the next generation of sport and exercise professionals.
