A day in the life of a social and cultural studies student

Are you interested in people, societies and culture? Do you find yourself wondering how people live, or have lived? Or why certain cultures think and communicate the way they do?

Whether you’re passionate about making a difference in local communities, using your creative writing skills to tell stories or love the idea of working as part of our Australian tourism landscape, then a degree in social and cultural studies could be what you’re looking for.

The world is in need of people with creative ideas and critical thinking skills who can see problems from different angles and, above all, have a passion for humanity. This passion will help to drive positive change, both now and in the future. You will be part of a cohort re-thinking the future for people and communities, actively engaging with world issues to find solutions.

Where could my degree take me?

There’s no limit to where your degree could take you. When studying social and cultural studies at Murdoch you’ll be exposed to a range of opportunities to ensure you get the most out of your studies. You could take up a placement through our dedicated Work Integrated Learning Program with community groups, non-government and not-for-profit organisations, or government organisations to work on real projects and campaigns designed to help generate positive change.

If you’re ready to explore the world, you could head to one of our partner universities across the globe on exchange, or travel to Indonesia as part of the ACICIS Study Indonesia project. Regardless of how you choose to complete your degree, one thing’s certain – all the work you do will help build your e-portfolio for you to showcase to employers when you graduate.

Learn from the best

When embarking on your new career, you’ll want to make sure you’re learning from the very best minds in the industry. Ideally, you want to surround yourself with people who have been there, have done what you want to do, and who can share with you the wisdom they’ve learned along the way.

Our free-thinking lecturers have worked across Australia and the world on a range of different projects, many with deep ties to industry professionals. Under their guidance, you’ll be given real-world cases to work on and gain experience that would otherwise take years to learn in the workplace.
