On the evening of November 5th, the School of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry and Physics (MSCP) at Murdoch University celebrated its 50th Anniversary with an Alumni event. The gathering was more than a milestone—it was a heartfelt reunion, a showcase of achievements, and a launchpad for future collaborations.
The evening began with drinks and canapés, as alumni, staff, and friends mingled in the welcoming atmosphere. The sense of community was palpable, with guests reconnecting and sharing stories from their time at the School of MSCP.
The event opened with an Acknowledgement of Country, recognising the Whadjuk and Binjareb Noogar people and the enduring tradition of learning on Murdoch University's lands. The respectful beginning set the tone for an evening focused on connection, legacy, and shared purpose.
Professor Bruce Gardiner, Head of School, welcomed guests and reflected on the School's journey.
"With the influx of new staff in the last couple of years, it is really important to hold such events to help us connect to our foundational history at MU, our contribution to interesting careers and to see how we can also create a legacy," he said.
A special shout-out goes to Dr Brendan Florio, Associate Dean of Engagement and Lecturer in Mathematics in the School of MSCP, whose energy and dedication brought the event to life. Dr Florio shared his own journey—from studying Physics to earning a PhD in Applied Mathematics, working as a mathematician in Ireland and Perth, and teaching high school students. His passion for engagement was evident throughout the evening.
Reflecting on the event's success, Dr Florio said, "Seeing our alumni return and reconnect with the School has been incredibly rewarding. It's a testament to the strength of our community and the impact our graduates continue to make."
The evening featured short talks from distinguished academics including:
- Dr Todd Gillam (Lecturer and Research Fellow, Chemistry) highlighted the School's research in areas such as minerals processing, forensic DNA preservation, and the chemistry of plants—showing how MSCP's work spans from industrial applications to potential medicines.
- Dr Alethea Rea (Senior Lecturer, Statistics) shared her work on ecological restoration, community completeness, and the use of machine learning in environmental science. Her presentation underscored the School's interdisciplinary approach and its partnerships with industry and other universities.

Among the guests was Dr Kim Chi Tran, an alumna who spoke about the significance of being invited and attending the event.
"Being invited back and welcomed so warmly reminded me of why I chose this School in the first place," Dr Tran said.
"It's more than just a place of learning—it's a community that continues to support and inspire long after graduation."

As the evening drew to a close, the conversations lingered and new connections were made. The event was not only a celebration of the School's rich history but also a commitment to building a thriving network for the future.
Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of the School of MSCP's 5th Anniversary Alumni Event. Special thanks to Dr Brendan Florio for his outstanding efforts in bringing our community together.
