Engaging with the community

The School of Education is a diverse, inclusive and vibrant learning community. Our academic and professional staff, students, industry partners and community come from around the corner and around the world, bringing with them rich perspectives and an enthusiasm for knowledge. Our community is welcoming and places quality education at the heart of all we do, as a fundamental human right.

We deeply value our connection with the Whadjuk and Binjareb Noongar people of our local community. The School of Education has an important role within the University’s broader community for fostering Reconciliation and for drawing on First Nations People’s knowledge, culture, language, family and perspectives in all that we do. Our connection to Aboriginal Elders, staff, students and community is a priority we all share, as is our commitment to culturally inclusive and respectful practice.

Our teaching takes us and our students into local schools and early learning centres, where we encounter and respond to the realities, priorities and challenges of contemporary life. Murdoch University has an enduring commitment to equitable access and outcomes through learning and teaching, and success in school is fundamental to this objective. Accessibility and opportunity through education are priorities for us and our students explore their local and wider communities through authentic Professional Experience placements and undertake volunteering in areas of community need. These experiences extend theory learned in the classroom and connect our research to issues of importance for our communities. This connects us with children and young people, parents and families, and teachers and leaders across metropolitan, regional, rural and remote Western Australia. These connections, perspectives and contexts shape our insights and priorities within our learning environments.

Our higher degree by research students also come to us from Africa, Asia, Europe and beyond. They bring unique insights from lives and careers forged across the globe and infuse our research culture with perspectives gathered through their own exciting projects.

The connections that exist within and across our diverse communities make the School of Education an exciting place to be. We look forward to you joining us.
