Murdoch Business School and the School of IT lead the way with Western Australia's only FinTech major
The financial sector is undergoing one of the most significant transformations in its history. From artificial intelligence and blockchain to digital platforms and decentralised finance, technology is fundamentally reshaping how financial services operate and how businesses create value. Recognising this shift, Murdoch Business School and the School of Information Technology have introduced a FinTech major, becoming the only university in Western Australia to offer this innovative combination.
Behind every trading algorithm and digital wallet is technology that someone had to design, build and secure. Our FinTech major gives you the IT skills to be that person. You'll develop strong foundations in programming and machine learning, then apply them to the intelligent systems that power today's financial world. You'll learn to build secure payment platforms, analyse large financial datasets, apply your data analytics skills to fraud detection and credit risk, and explore emerging technologies. Along the way, you'll gain the solid understanding of finance required to know what you're building and why it matters. Through hands-on projects and industry-relevant tools, you'll graduate with a technical portfolio and the skills to step into roles like FinTech developer, data analyst, cybersecurity specialist or solutions architect in banks, startups and technology companies around the world.
The new major has been developed to meet growing industry demand for graduates who can combine strong business acumen with advanced technological capability. Students will gain exposure to emerging areas including data analytics, algorithmic trading, blockchain technologies, decentralised finance and a range of contemporary FinTech applications. Beyond technical knowledge, the program also focuses on preparing graduates to navigate the strategic, commercial and regulatory challenges of a fast-changing global financial environment.
According to Professor David Lee Kuo Chuen, Chairman of the Global FinTech Institute, the introduction of the major represents a significant milestone.
"FinTech is no longer a niche specialisation; it is becoming part of the core architecture of modern business. By embedding FinTech within the Bachelor of Business, the University is demonstrating remarkable foresight and educational leadership."
Professor Lee further highlighted the strategic importance of the program, noting that Murdoch's distinctive offering equips students with the technological, commercial, regulatory and ethical capabilities needed to lead in a rapidly transforming financial world.
The major also reflects Murdoch Business School's commitment to industry engagement and future-focused education. Developed with input from academic experts including Dr Ariful Hoque, the curriculum ensures students are equipped with the skills employers increasingly seek across financial services, consulting, technology and digital enterprise.
Professor Antonia Girardi, Dean of Murdoch Business School, also acknowledged the contribution of the Global FinTech Institute, thanking the organisation for its continued support and partnership in helping advance FinTech education and innovation and strengthen the reach and impact of the University's program.
Professor Ferdous Sohel, Dean of the School of Information Technology, noted: “Whether you see yourself as an entrepreneur launching a startup, or as a leader of innovation inside a major financial institution or as the person who will build the tools on which regulators will rely, the FinTech major gives you the technical depth and business judgement to get there.”
As the future of finance becomes increasingly digital, this partnership is preparing graduates not simply to respond to change, but to lead it. Through its unique FinTech major, students will graduate with the knowledge, practical skills and forward-thinking mindset needed to shape the future of business and financial innovation.
