Alumni Success Stories, Dr Nathan Smith
We interviewed Exercise Science PhD alumnus Dr Nathan Smith, he describes his experiences during and after Murdoch University, going international with his work whilst staying local.
What were some of the studies and projects you completed at Murdoch?
My PhD examined how to prescribe blood flow restriction (BFR) during endurance cyclists’ training to improve their sports performance. The BFR technique involves applying a restrictive cuff to the top of the thighs during exercise, restricting blood flow. Under the supervision of Professors Jeremiah Peiffer, Olivier Girard and A/Professor Brendan Scott I completed four research projects: 1) the usefulness of a difficulty rating to prescribe the intensity (e.g., cycle at a 6 out of 10), 2) the effect of BFR on pacing, 3) the cardiovascular and neuromuscular effects, and 4) the impact on training loads. The findings of these projects show how trained cyclists could use BFR to improve their endurance performance, which could include our Olympians preparing for Brisbane 2032!

Can you briefly describe your career since graduating from Murdoch University with your PhD?
Since graduating with my PhD two years ago, I have become a lecturer at the University of Notre Dame, Australia. Thanks to the skills I began developing at Murdoch University, I have taken on various committees and recently received a Vice-Chancellor's Award for teaching excellence. I have also continued to progress in my research, such as supporting initiatives at my university and collaborating internationally on upcoming projects.

Murdoch University Experience
What were your expectations of studying at Murdoch University as a prospective student, and how did your experience compare?
I expected Murdoch to be a contemporary university, and that’s certainly the experience I had there. I completed my degree alongside an inclusive and supportive cohort of fellow PhD students. I also found the academic staff highly knowledgeable and genuinely invested in my welfare and success, even those outside my supervisory team.
What motivated you to pursue your studies at Murdoch University?
The main reason I chose Murdoch University was due to the expertise of my supervisors. Each was world-renowned in their field and experienced in supervising students like me. In addition, the university had a strong reputation for research and innovation, which aligned well with my academic goals. The facilities were modern and well-equipped, providing a professional environment in which to conduct my studies effectively. Altogether, Murdoch offered the right mix of mentorship, resources, and institutional credibility to support my development.
Industry Perspective and Future Aspirations
How do you envision the future of your field, and what key skills do you think will be essential for future graduates?
I’ve found that both interpersonal skills and critical thinking are becoming increasingly important for graduates. Many students have a sound theoretical understanding of the content, yet struggle to get the support they need or cannot look at problems from different perspectives to arrive at a holistic answer. The daily challenges faced in the workplace are often not black and white, and instead sit in a grey area that needs to be navigated with care. Both strong interpersonal skills and critical thinking will help graduates navigate these tricky situations.
