Open to a career in Criminology

Open to a career in Criminology Day

Are you fascinated by true crime documentaries? Do you find yourself getting hooked by the twists and turns as the story unfolds, uncovering crucial pieces of evidence or the dramatic endings.

Maybe you’ve always wondered what it could be like to experience all of those things yourself. To investigate a crime scene and piece together the story of crime for yourself, or better still, profiling crimes to prevent them before they ever happen.

If so, it sounds like you could be open to a career in criminology!

Bachelor of Criminology is structured to provide you with a well-rounded view of crime with guided learning from experienced criminologists providing unique real-world insights at every juncture of your learning. You will find yourself exploring different perspectives of crime, investigating why people commit offences, how to reduce or prevent crime, and how to help both victims and offenders involved in the criminal justice system, all equipping you with the essential skills needed to start your career.

If you are looking specialise in a particular field, you’ve come to the right place. Our three criminology majors of Crime Science, Criminal Behaviour and Legal Studies.

A major in Crime Science you’ll explore the areas of science that can lead to solving and preventing crime and learn why more than one approach is often needed in problem-solving.

Whilst the Criminal Behaviour major will push you to challenge common perceptions of crime as you investigate why people commit offences, how to reduce or prevent crime, and how to help both victims and offenders involved in the criminal justice system.

Finally, a with a major in Legal Studies, you will examine the Australian legal system and the way it shapes our society through a range of issues such as human trafficking, white collar crime, and legal responses to systemic disadvantage.

The places you could go

Our Criminology graduates might find themselves in any number of diverse industries, whether it’s in local, federal or international law enforcement, government or legal, or within corrective services. And the different roles are just as unique!

You might find yourself working as a Criminologist, dedicated to providing expert insights which assist in determining the causes of crime.

Or if you picture a hands-on role investigating crimes, you could study a combined Bachelor of Criminology and Bachelor of Science degree, which might find you undertaking fingerprint analysis or processing key crime scene evidence.
