Murdoch walks together towards reconciliation with Innovate RAP

Murdoch University has officially launched its 2025–2027 Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), marking a purposeful new chapter in its commitment to reconciliation, truth-telling and Indigenous empowerment.
Unveiled at a special celebration on Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar, the RAP was developed under the leadership of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team in close partnership with First Nations leadership and colleagues, and the RAP Working Group.
It builds on Murdoch’s long-standing dedication to social justice and inclusion and aligns closely with the commitments the University’s strategic plan, Ngala Kwop Biddi – Building a Brighter Future, Together.
Vice Chancellor Andrew Deeks described the RAP as a milestone in Murdoch’s journey.
“Our new Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan supports our commitment to being the university of choice for First Nations peoples by driving progress toward genuine and meaningful reconciliation,” Professor Deeks said.
“It calls on non-Indigenous members of our community to take the lead in this vital journey, fostering a sense of belonging, trust, and shared understanding between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the broader University community.”
The RAP outlines tangible actions across five key dimensions: race relations, equality and equity, institutional integrity, unity, and historical acceptance.
These pillars will guide Murdoch’s efforts to embed reconciliation across university life – from governance and curriculum to community engagement and cultural awareness.
Pro Vice Chancellor First Nations Professor Chanelle van den Berg emphasised the importance of action over symbolism.
“Now, more than ever, we must address the unfinished business of reconciliation,” Professor van den Berg said.
“This RAP is a call to action, ensuring that non-Indigenous allies actively engage in the work – listening, learning and taking responsibility for making meaningful change.
“Reconciliation is a shared responsibility, and this plan reflects our collective commitment to walking the talk.”
The development of the RAP being led by the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion team was a deliberate and important part of its design.
“Reconciliation is a responsibility that should rest primarily with non-Indigenous people,” Pro Vice Chancellor Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Dr Rebecca Bennett said.
“Yet, for too long, the burden of advocacy, truth-telling, and change has fallen on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
“At Murdoch University, we recognise this imbalance, which is why reconciliation is being led by non-Indigenous staff.”
Importantly, the RAP also responds to the national conversation and changing context, following the 2023 Indigenous Voice referendum.
“Many felt uncertain about the future of reconciliation in Australia after the referendum,” Dr Bennett said.
“But reconciliation is not a single moment – it is an enduring commitment to justice and action.”
The launch event and cover design of the RAP featured the artwork “Walking Together in Solidarity” by emerging Noongar artist Emily McCann, symbolising the strength and unity that comes from reconciliation.
The piece was commissioned to reflect Murdoch’s commitment to cultural respect and storytelling through art.
Murdoch’s RAP is more than a document – it is a roadmap for change.
It includes commitments to increase First Nations staff representation, embed Indigenous Knowledges across the curriculum, and create culturally safe spaces for learning and dialogue.
This work integrates with the University’s First Nations strategy, which has already established initiatives such as the Murdoch Yarn, cultural load allowance policy, and Indigenous Excellence Awards, among the many actions designed to foster inclusion and celebrate Indigenous contributions.
As Murdoch moves forward, the message is clear: reconciliation is everyone’s business.
“Together, we can create a more inclusive, respectful, and equitable future for all,” Professor Deeks said.
Murdoch University invites all staff, students, and community members to engage with the RAP, reflect on its goals, and contribute to the journey of reconciliation.
