Wanting to take his career to a more senior leadership level, Murdoch alumnus Russell decided to return to university to complete a Master of Information Technology.

It was 24 years ago that Russell first made the decision to study Information Technology at Murdoch, so when it came to his postgraduate studies, he said the choice was obvious.

“Murdoch was always an easy choice for me. As the first person in my family to go to university, I instantly felt involved in uni life and Murdoch quickly felt like my second home. So it was only natural when I was presented with an opportunity to complete my Masters that I chose to come back to Murdoch,” he said.

Having worked as an Analyst, Programmer, IT Architect and now a Senior Consultant for Quorum Software, Russell had extensive technical skills and was looking to take the next step in his career and move into more management and leadership based roles.

“I already had a solid understanding of the technical skills required to be a functional team member in the IT industry, but what I really wanted to gain was the business acumen and managerial skills needed to motivate and lead successful teams,” he said.

Most universities offer the same teaching content in terms of technical skills, but the difference that Murdoch’s offered was that their degree was geared more towards those who want to become leaders.”

The course is designed to extend on the existing experience of students, providing them with the opportunity to collaborate with key industry partners and further develop the skills needed by modern IT professionals to take their career to the next level.

“I have learnt how to look at problems in a different light to find the best solution. I honed my experience in business analytics and leveraged data science to help solve specific real-world problems. Not only this I’ve learnt how to deliver content in a compelling way, both in online and face-to-face forums,” he said.

Russell says that completing his postgraduate studies has allowed him to visualise tasks much easier and has allowed him to move into a team leadership position with his current employer.

If you’re keen to take the next step in your career and position yourself as a leader within the IT industry explore the Master of Information Technology.
