Emerging First Nations art workers drop by
2024 was a busy year with frequent visitors to the campus visiting the gallery to view exhibitions and the art collection.
One of the most enjoyable occasions of late was when four emerging First Nations art workers visited the Murdoch University Art Gallery and met with the University’s Curatorial Team.
Jessie Ward from Waringarri Arts in Kununurra, Rebekah Taylor from Bidyadanga Artists in Broome, Nathan Stretch from Yarliyil Arts in Halls Creek and Deahna Robinson from Juluwarlu Arts Group in Roeburne were on a visit to Perth organised by The Aboriginal Arts Centre Hub Western Australia (AACHWA).
The arts workers were in Perth for a couple weeks to participate in AACHWA’s “Future Aboriginal Arts Worker Training Program”. As part of this program, AACHWA scheduled visits to select Indigenous art collections in the metropolitan area. At Murdoch, they had an opportunity to look through the new “SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER’ exhibition before meeting with Murdoch’s curators Mark Stewart and Baige Zylstra to learn more about contemporary First Nations art, exhibition development and art collection management. The art workers were accompanied by AACHWA staff members Amy Barrett-Lennard and Jacky Cheng.
