Brett Nannup joins the Art Collection’s Board
We are excited to welcome artist and museum professional, Brett Nannup, as the newest member of Murdoch University Art Collection’s Advisory Board.
Brett Nannup is a proud Noongar man with cultural links to the Binjareb and Wilman Clans of the Noongar Nation.
Since 2002, Brett has forged an impressive visual arts practice which encompasses print making and public art. He was introduced and trained in printmaking techniques by his mother, the beloved and celebrated Noongar artist, Laurel Nannup.
Brett’s artwork investigates ideas of what it takes to be a ‘man’ in contemporary society, as well as exploring his own identity and place in the duality of the Noongar and Wadjella worlds.
His artwork has been exhibited widely and acknowledged through various awards including Finalist in both the 2024 and 2025 NATSIAA National Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, Printmaking Category Winner in the 2024 City of Melville Art Awards, and Winner of the Whadjuk Award in the 2024 City of Bayswater Art Awards.
In recent years, Brett’s arts practice has expanded into public art with several notable commissions including Through the Eyes of Our Elders (2023), a series of perforated aluminium panels in the courtyard of the QV1 Building, in Perth’s CBD and Gumap & Gudbru (2025) a unique state aluminium cast sculpture recently unveiled in the foyer of Number 9 The Esplanade, also in Perth’s CBD. The Gumap & Gudbru commission is a result of a meaningful collaboration between Brett, Whadjuk Noongar cultural advisors Barry McGuire and Carol Innes, the fabricators, Urban Art Projects and the developers Brookfield Properties and Cbus Properties.

Brett’s artworks are represented in Art Collections throughout Australia and abroad including Murdoch University, Holmes a Court Collection, National Gallery of Australia, Western Australian Museum, Berndt Museum of Anthropology, Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Museum, New York Public Library, and Harvard Art Museum.
With a depth of experience as a Noongar artist, and as a museum professional, Brett brings new, diverse and valued perspectives to the Board and will be an integral member whose contributions will assist the Art Collection in achieving its vision and strategic goals.
Reflecting on his Board appointment, Brett says, "I'm truly honoured to join the Murdoch University Art Collection Board. As someone with a deep respect and love for the arts, I’m excited to share my cultural knowledge and perspectives, and to contribute to a collection that reflects and celebrates diverse stories, identities, and voices."
