Open to a career in Veterinary Science

Open to a career in Veterinary Science Day

Do you have a deep love for animals and enjoy working with people who share that passion?

Do you love solving medical problems and figuring out how complex conditions can be treated or managed? Or are you excited by the idea of contributing to research in an everchanging medical landscape?

If so, it sounds like you could be open to a career in veterinary sciences!

Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is an integrated Bachelors-Masters degree which takes place over five years and is the pathway to becoming a qualified veterinarian. The first three years of the vet degree, which makes up the Bachelor of Science is all about laying strong foundations — students build their understanding of how animals work, what happens when things go wrong, and how vets think, communicate, and behave as professionals. By the end of third year, you will begun to put this into practice through animal handling, examinations, and early workplace experiences in animal industries and veterinary practices so you are ready clinical years ahead.

The final two years under the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine are where everything really comes together. During fourth year students develop and refine their clinical reasoning and skill development, working by species and learning how to think and act like a vet in real cases. Fifth year is the full clinical year, with students embedded in rotations and placements, applying their skills day-to-day, building confidence, and at completion are ready to step into practice as new graduates.

These five years of valuable learnings will equip you with everything you need to become a well rounded veterinary professional.

Getting out of the classroom

Let’s be honest, there’s only so much that you can learn from a textbook. That’s why our veterinary science program combines a science-based approach with hands-on experience ensuring that you’ve got all the technical know-how and the practical experience using it to head into the industry as the best professional you can be.

How does this happen? Well lucky for you, we’ve got a pretty unique offering when it comes to studying veterinary medicine.

The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University is our very own veterinary teaching hospital located on our Perth campus, which gives you the chance to apply all of your classroom learnings to real animal patients in the final year of your studies. You will get to work alongside expert veterinarians across a range of disciplines, assisting with the diagnosis and treatment of household pets, exotic animals, and farm animals across a range of unique settings.

We are also the only city university in Australia with a campus farm, in addition to two farms located away from the campus. The access to these farms gives you the unique opportunity to get practical experience, such as working with cows, sheep, horses, and pigs; learning animal handling, clinical examination techniques, as well as a range of technical skills, for example pregnancy diagnosis in the cow.

Beyond our campus facilities, there will be a number of unique opportunities to get further experience, including clinical placements in real world settings such as animal shelters or wildlife facilities.

No matter where you find yourself throughout your studies, you will be getting the best experience

The places you could go

You might think that after your studies your only option will be as a veterinary clinician. Whilst it’s true that many graduates go on to private clinical practices, there are a lot of different career pathways available. In actual fact, when you graduate you will be prepared for a diverse range of careers in animal health related fields.

You might choose to work as a government veterinarian and look after Australia’s biosecurity that keeps our animals, people and food safe.

Or maybe you might find yourself working with wildlife in a conservation role, helping to protect Australia’s unique wildlife.

Regardless of where your degree takes you, you’ll be equipped with everything you need to provide an exceptional standard of care for creatures big and small.
