MU on 35: Taleesha

Taleesha on Bush Court

'MU on 35' is simple: we hand students a disposable film camera and one brief - photograph the things you care about.

Taleesha is in her final year of Criminology and Psychology, our Indigenous Guild Representative and a five-year member of the cheer team. She cares out loud, and she's spent her time here making our university better for the students who'll come after her.

Here's what she captured, in her own words.

Hi, I’m Taleesha!

I am a Binjerup and Ballardong Nyoongar woman, I am currently in my final year of studying a Bachelor of Criminology/Psychology. I am the university's Indigenous Guild Representative and a part of the Murdoch Cheer and Dance Club.

I have been on the Cheer Team for 5 years and it has been one of the best parts of my uni experience. I am also passionate about creating a better space for Indigenous students while at university and making sure students are supported as well as engaging with what the uni has to offer.

A uni experience that goes beyond class

The photo of the picnic was of the Murdoch Cheer and Dance Welcome picnic. I think it's so important to try and meet new people while at uni, and being a part of this club has allowed me to make so many amazing friendships.

I also think that the university experience goes so far beyond just classes and it's important for people to try and get the most out of their experience, whether it's joining a club, or going to events on campus.

Being part of a bigger change

The photos of the two meetings, one is of a Guild meeting and the other is the Djirda Wirrin Student Committee, which is a student run initiative to provide support and improve uni life for Indigenous students.

My roles on these committees are extremely important to me, as it's really special to be a part of a bigger change here at Murdoch. This also goes back to my goals of making Murdoch a better space for Indigenous students.

Coming together at Kulbardi

The photos of the students at the tables are the Kulbardi craft sessions.

They are an amazing way for Indigenous students to connect and it's so great seeing everyone come together and take a break from studying.
