From sinks to soil: How our students are helping Perth reuse greywater to support a sustainable future

Murdoch University Environmental Engineering student in home garden

Environmental Engineering student Laxmi is applying hands-on learning in Perth to improve greywater reuse systems, helping households conserve drinking water while gaining real-world skills for her future career.

Meet Laxmi, one of our Environmental Engineering students, who’s turning theory into real impact. Her latest project is measuring how a greywater diversion system can support garden irrigation across Perth homes and help conserve our city’s precious drinking water.

Laxmi discovered her passion for environmental engineering during her undergraduate studies in Bhutan. When she learned about our School of Engineering and Energy and the hands-on projects our students undertake, she decided to relocate to Perth and continue her studies with us. Her project is based in a Fremantle home fitted with a GreyFlow PRO system – a unit that redirects greywater from kitchens, bathrooms and laundries straight into the garden. By filtering out hair and other solids, the system allows homeowners to safely reuse water that would normally go to waste, easing pressure on Perth’s limited drinking water supply.

Each week, Laxmi visits the home to measure the water meters on the irrigation system and the pump to calculate the efficiency of the diversion system and determine how much water is diverted and used in the garden.

For Laxmi, the goal is twofold. To improve the performance of the system and inspire more homeowners to adopt greywater reuse as a simple, effective way to conserve water.

This kind of hands-on learning gives our students the confidence, skills, and experience they need from day one of their careers, which helps them stand out in a competitive industry.
