Clubs and societies at Murdoch University

Murdoch University students enjoying a game of volleyball

From cheerleading to medieval combat to esports, there's a club for almost every interest at Murdoch University. Here's what's on offer, how to join, and how to start your own.

Some of the best parts of uni happen outside the lecture theatre.

Joining a club is the fastest way to find your people, take a proper break from study, and end up doing things you'd never have tried otherwise.

Our clubs and societies are run through the Murdoch Guild, and there's more range than most people expect.

What kind of clubs can you join?

Whatever you're into, there's likely a club for it. To give you a sense of the spread, you could find yourself:

  • Competing with the Cheer and Dance Club, on the basketball court, or out on the volleyball oval
  • Settling in for a session at the Esports Gaming Hub, kitted out with 12 Alienware machines
  • Suiting up for medieval combat with the Murdoch Medieval Society
  • Diving with one of our longest-running clubs, going strong since the 1970s
  • Building your network through interest and discipline-based societies, from Women in STEM to international student groups

Because the line-up changes from year to year, the full current list lives on the Guild website, that's the place to see exactly what's running right now.

Why it's worth joining one

You don't need a grand reason. A club gives you an instant starting point with people who already share your interests, which beats trying to make friends in the gaps of a 45-minute lecture. It's also a low-stakes way to try something new, build skills that look great after you graduate, and stay connected to campus life when assignments pile up.

How to join, and what it costs

Joining is genuinely easy. Guild membership is free, and it's your pass to clubs, events, and student discounts. The simplest way in is to rock up to Clubs and Socs Day at the start of semester, where every club sets up a stall in one place so you can meet them, ask questions, and sign up on the spot.

Want to start your own?

Can't find a club for your particular passion? Start one. Affiliated clubs can apply for up to $1,500 in Guild funding for the year, plus support with venues, budgeting, and getting set up. If you've got an idea and a few like-minded people, that's most of the way there.

What else is on around campus

Clubs are just one slice of campus life. During teaching weeks you'll find the Murdoch Markets on Bush Court every Thursday from 10am to 2pm, plus regular Guild events through the year like Festival Day and Stress Less Week. There's almost always something happening if you want a break.
