5 ways to look after your mental wellbeing during exam season

Exam season is an important time to check in with those around you and seek support if you need it.

It's normal to feel overwhelmed or like things are outside of your control with the added pressure and stress at this time of year, making it more important than ever to prioritise your mental wellbeing.

Looking after your mental wellbeing during exam season can mean different things for different people. For some, it might be taking regular breaks or spending time outdoors. For others, it might mean reaching out for support.

Hear from our Master of Counselling students on the importance of creating space to talk and why seeking support can make a difference.

You don’t need to have big problems to access help... there’s always something to talk about and always something to work towards, no matter how small, no matter how big. - Blake, Master of Counselling student

Here are five simple ways to support your mental wellbeing during exam season.

1. Take regular breaks

Studying for long periods without a break can make it harder to concentrate, retain information and stay motivated. Scheduling regular breaks gives your mind a chance to rest and recharge, helping you return to your studies feeling refreshed and focused.

Make the most of your break by stepping away from your screen and resisting the urge to doomscroll, even for just a few minutes.

2. Stay active and get outdoors

When exam season gets busy, physical activity is often one of the first things to fall off the to-do list. Taking time to move your body, get some fresh air or step away from your screen can help you reset.

Whether it's a walk, some stretching, yoga or a few minutes of mindfulness, small moments of movement can help you feel more refreshed and focused.

3. Fuel your body and mind

When you're studying for exams, it's easy to reach for quick snacks or forget to drink enough water. Staying fuelled and hydrated, however, can help support concentration, memory and energy levels.

Try to keep a water bottle nearby and make time for balanced meals and snacks throughout the day.

4. Make time for connection

Studying for hours on end can sometimes feel isolating. Taking time to connect with friends, family or others you trust can provide a welcome break from your studies and help reduce feelings of stress or anxiety.

Whether it's a quick coffee catch-up, a phone call or a walk with a friend, staying connected can help you feel supported during busy periods.

5. Ask for help when you need it

You don't have to go it alone. If you're feeling overwhelmed, stressed or simply need someone to talk to, reaching out for support can make a real difference.

Speaking with a friend, family member or support professional can help you feel more supported and better equipped to manage challenges.

There are a range of support services available on campus, including our Caladenia Clinic, which provides free counselling and creative arts therapies sessions for students and staff and affordable counselling services for the wider community.

While supporting those who access the service, the Caladenia Clinic also provides valuable placement opportunities for Master of Counselling students as they prepare for their future careers.

It mainly gives you a space where you can actually open up at the end of the day. - Bhavie, Master of Counselling student

Your wellbeing matters, especially during busy periods like exam season. By making time to look after yourself and seeking support when you need it, you can better navigate the challenges that come your way.

Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength and support is available when you need it.
