To balance gender equity scales, we must listen to, and learn from, women's lived experiences

Staff across the University gathered to hear from inspirational women in our community.

The 2026 United Nations International Women’s Day theme was Balancing the Scales, and Murdoch University celebrated by hosting a ‘living library’.

Instead of borrowing books, attendees had the opportunity to ‘borrow’ people and hear stories from women across our university community about their lived experiences.

This event was inspired by the theme, and the knowledge that balancing the scales begins with listening and learning.

“As a university, we play a pivotal role in balancing the scales,” Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Projects Coordinator Rebecca Pinker said.

Our classrooms, laboratories, offices and meetings rooms are places where cultures are shaped. By committing to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, we are committing to creating an environment where women can thrive, lead and be heard.

Each living library ‘book’ had unique life experiences, career paths and dreams to share, as well as obstacles they have had to face.

“Professionally, having spent almost 20 years working in social justice, I see International Women’s Day as a call to action; particularly for those working outside the EDI space. Gender equity isn’t a women’s issue; it’s a collective responsibility that requires male allyship, systemic change, leadership accountability and sustained effort,” People and Culture Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Lead Liz Leahy said.

For me, International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate progress, while educating on the significant work required to achieve real equity, which won’t be achieved until women feel safe in our workplaces, homes and communities.

The living library event was a celebration of the diversity and successes of women, and a reminder that every woman and girl, regardless of background, identity, or lived experience, deserves the freedom to shape her own life.
