Sustainable changemaker from Murdoch University wins 2024 Aspire Award
Dr Biji Kurup, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Engineering, has been awarded the 2024 Aspire Award from Business Events Perth for her dedication towards developing sustainable solutions in the fields of industrial ecology and waste management.
Dr Kurup was recognised, along with nine others, as one of Western Australia’s brightest minds for her global impact and commitment to sustainable practices.
Her work has not only advanced the scientific community but enriched the educational experiences of countless students at Murdoch University.

A highly accomplished Chartered Civil and Environmental Engineer with a PhD in Industrial Symbiosis and Sustainability, Dr Kurup serves as a role model for the next generation of engineers – ensuring they are not only technically proficient but are committed to developing sustainable solutions that deliver a brighter future for all.

Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Professor Parisa Bahri explained how Dr Kurup’s research and approach to teaching have reenforced Murdoch’s strategy to embed sustainability into the curriculum.

As the 2024 Aspire Award winner, Dr Kurup has been presented with the opportunity to attend an international conference of her choice. The trip is funded by Business Events Perth.
Dr Kurup will be attending the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE) Conference in July 2025.
For the past 20 years, Dr Kurup has actively participated in the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE), contributing to global discussions and sharing knowledge within the community to establish best practices.
“Receiving this award has meant that I can extend my involvement with the ISIE and enhance the University’s collaborative efforts on an international scale,” Dr Kurup said.
“I’ll have the chance to connect with industry leaders and share my findings.”
