The AFL’s 2025 Sir Doug Nicholls Round will see the Brisbane Lions don guernseys designed by School of Indigenous Knowledges lecturer Jordan Ah Chee.

The opportunity arose after Jordan's younger brother Callum, a forward for the lions, asked if he would be interested in putting his design hat on.

“I said yes, of course. The artwork tells the story of my family, Cal’s journey, and how everything comes together,” Jordan said.

At the heart of the design is the connecting of the Mardoowarra (Fitzroy River) and Bilya Maadjit (Murray River), linked to the Ah Chee family’s connections to the Bindjareb, Palyku, Yawuru and Nyikina peoples.

“I’ve always felt a strong connection to rivers – to me they represent journeys and stories. The two rivers at the top represent both sides of our family – dad's and mum’s. And all of the stories that brought those families together.”

The rivers along the bottom of the guernsey, the Maiwar (Brisbane River) and the Birrarung (Yarra River), represent the team’s own unique beginning – when the Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy Lions joined to become the Brisbane Lions.

“The circle is Cal and the team coming together to the place they’re in now,” Jordan said.

“Around that are symbols that represent community members and the people behind the scenes in the team and at the club – the people who make it all happen.”

The design is pulled together by a boab tree on the back of the guernsey, which represents The Kimberley, where Callum was born. There are six symbols around the boab tree, which represent all of the Ah Chee brothers.

“It definitely tells Cal’s story and our family’s story, and the strong connections to rivers. My mum and dad always say it’s the life blood of the people, their rivers.”

Jordan will be flying over to watch his brother and the Lions run out onto the field in the guernsey this Sunday, May 18.
