Researchers invited to share aquatic expertise on a global scale
Two of Murdoch's leading researchers have shared their aquatic forensics and ecosystem expertise on a global scale.
Pro Vice Chancellor of the College of Environmental and Life Sciences Professor Jennifer Verduin and Associate Professor in Forensics Paola Magni were invited to present their research aboard the Amerigo Vespucci, known as 'the most beautiful ship in the world, on the one Australian stop along its world tour.
The Amerigo Vespucci is a renowned Italian training tall ship operated by the Italian Navy - in addition to its role in training naval cadets, the ship serves as a platform for international scientific research.
Accompanying the Amerigo Vespucci was the fully accessible Catamarano Stella, which was designed for inclusivity as part of the 'Wheels on Waves' program facilitated by the Italian Embassy in Australia.
Associate Professor Magni shared her expertise in underwater forensics, while Professor Verduin presented her research into the conservation and restoration of seagrass.
Professor Magni said the event provided a unique platform for global scientific collaboration, while emphasising the interconnectedness of the world's oceans and the need for joint efforts to protect marine environments.
"The Amerigo Vespucci holds a special place in my heart, as an Italian-born scientist who has had the privilege of working with the Italian Navy on investigative cases in the past," she said.
I hope this event paves the way for future collaborations and fosters deeper research partnerships, expanding our efforts in underwater forensics and marine conservation on a global scale."
Professor Verduin said that sharing her research on a tall ship held a unique personal value for her.
"As a teacher of oceanography on a tall ship of a different level, the STS Leeuwin II, it inspires me to guide our students and instil a sense of environmental stewardship and awe for natural systems, especially important for oceanography and marine sciences," she said.
The blend of naval tradition, educational outreach, and scientific collaboration highlights the opportunity of nurturing dialogue and global partnerships in marine science.”
The event highlighted Murdoch University’s role in advancing innovative research that not only benefits Australia but resonates globally, fostering international partnerships to protect and sustain the world's oceans.
