Murdoch University joins international education coalition committed to climate action

Murdoch University has taken another step in its unwavering commitment to environmental action by joining a growing global coalition of education institutions dedicated to combatting climate change.

The CANIE Accord is a sector-wide commitment to align international education with the goals of climate justice, emissions reduction, and sustainability. By signing the Accord, Murdoch University has affirmed its commitment to embedding climate action into the heart of our international education.

This milestone aligns directly with Murdoch’s Moorditj Boodja – Strong Country Sustainability Sub-Strategy 2024–2030, which outlines the University’s vision for a just and regenerative future grounded in First Nations knowledge, systems thinking, and action led by the University community.

Pro Vice Chancellor Sustainability Associate Professor Martin Brueckner said that by signing this Accord, the University was aligning with a distinguished list of institutions which demonstrate leadership in transforming international education into a force for climate resilience.

“The actions we have committed to reflect the journey we are on to ensure our actions meet our aspirations. Becoming a signatory to the CANIE Accord is an important step towards embedding sustainable approaches across the university,” Associate Professor Brueckner said.

“All University stakeholders are a part of the solution and we acknowledge the strong leadership of the DVC Global Engagement, Simon McKirdy and PVC International Kelly Smith in taking this step."

The Accord also complements the Decarbonisation Roadmap 2025–2030, which sets out a clear and actionable pathway to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 90% by 2030 through energy efficiency, renewable energy, and innovation; with a goal to reach net zero inclusive of Scope 3 emissions by 2050.

Murdoch University has committed to several climate actions including:

  • Principle 1 - Take Immediate Action

Embedding climate action into institutional policies, strategies, and decision-making.

  • Principle 2 - Collaborate, Innovate, and Educate

Building climate literacy among students and staff, and fostering global partnerships for sustainable development.

  • Principle 3 - Develop Climate Solutions that Advance Social Justice

Our commitment to justice, equity, and human rights compels us to develop climate solutions that aim to advance individual and collective well-being and reduce inequalities and deprivations.
