Murdoch University metallurgical engineering Phd student Tina Phiri has won the Postgraduate Research Excellence Award from the Joint Chemical Engineering Committee (JCEC) of Western Australia, in conjunction with Engineers Australia.
This prestigious competition showcases the best chemical engineering research being conducted by postgraduates in WA.
Phiri won for her research titled Thermochemical analysis and mineralogical characterisation for extraction of copper and cobalt from smelting slag waste.
The competition is open to all chemical engineering postgraduate students in WA to showcase the latest research and one finalist from Murdoch University, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and The University of Western Australia are selected to represent their institution.
Phiri says it was an honour representing Murdoch and that winning the award has greatly motivated her to maintain her commitment to research excellence.
"I feel incredibly honoured that the novelty and relevance of my research to the industry has been acknowledged," said Ms Phiri.
“I would like to sincerely thank JCEC, the Institution of Chemical Engineers, and Engineers Australia for selecting me as the recipient of this award.
“This award has greatly motivated me to persist in my diligent efforts and maintain my commitment to the highest standards of research excellence.
"I owe my success to the invaluable contributions of my supervisors, Professor Aleksandar Nikoloski and Professor Pritam Singh.
“I am also incredibly thankful to Murdoch University for providing exceptional research facilities and the necessary assistance to conduct my research.
Lastly, I express my profound gratitude to my sponsors, the Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future, for their generous financial assistance."
Professor Aleksander Nikoloski said Phiri has demonstrated she is an outstanding research talent.
“It has been a real pleasure for me to be associated with Tina’s study in my capacity as her PhD supervisor,” Professor Nikoloski said.
“Tina has clearly demonstrated herself to be an amazing individual, an outstanding research talent and a credit to Murdoch University, and I am honoured to have contributed to her academic journey.
“Meeting individuals like her, to guide and to observe their research development, I consider one of the best and exclusive privileges of being an academic.”
