Murdoch carves out victory in meat judging competition

Meat judging students

Students from Murdoch University have won overall placings at the 2025 Intercollegiate Meat Judging Conference and Competition.

A group of 10 Murdoch students travelled to New South Wales for the competition where they took part in beef, pork and lamb judging across eight days.

Team leader and Murdoch University Post Doctoral Research Fellow Dr Sonya Moyes said the group was thrilled with the results.

“This past week, I have led ten Agricultural Science students on a red meat supply chain industry tour, which included participation in the Intercollegiate Meat Judging (ICMJ) Conference and Competition as well as visits to numerous companies across the supply chain,” Dr. Moyes said.

“The students came first in overall placings in the competition, which was comprised of points earned across judging carcasses and answering questions related to the carcasses.

“They also came runner up in beef judging to the Texas A and M team – an amazing effort to be the number one beef judging team in Australia!

“The experience allowed the students to step out of their comfort zones and network with students from across Australia, the United States, Japan, as well as industry leaders.

“The wealth of knowledge gained from attending ICMJ and the study tour will be extremely beneficial as they look to begin their careers in the agricultural industry."

Three of the students will now travel to Brisbane for a chance to be selected for the Australian National Meat Judging Team, which will compete in the USA next year.

“They’re all pretty eager now to get more involved within the industry. It’s a great opportunity for them to network with industry professionals — they got to meet over 40 companies at the careers expo, so just seeing the versatility of opportunities as well,” Dr Moyes said.

The trip to New South Wales was sponsored by Harvest Road, Royal Agricultural Society of WA, Stirling Ranges Beef, West Coast Meat Solutions, Ballawinna Angus Stud, Kylagh Cattle, and Boree Park Stud.
