Before undertaking Murdoch University preparation course OnTrack, Catherine Price wasn’t sure she could make it in higher education.
The aspiring scientist from Rockingham left school after year 10 to help support her family, which had been impacted by domestic violence.
Years later, after leaving her own violent relationship, she took the brave step towards breaking the cycle and returned to education to help provide her two children with better opportunities.
After completing certificates at TAFE, Ms Price investigated her options for accessing a career in clinical laboratories, and found Murdoch’s 14-week university preparation course OnTrack.
On Friday, she officially completes the course, providing her with an alternative pathway into Murdoch’s courses, and the chance to break the cycle of financial disadvantage that has beset her family.
“OnTrack has helped me realise what I am truly capable of despite having little education,” Ms Price said.
“It has helped to develop my academic skills to a university standard.
For anyone else considering the OnTrack course I would have to say: ‘Why not? What have you got to lose?’
Ms Price will be starting her Bachelor of Science majoring in Clinical Laboratory Sciences in late July, a course she has chosen because of the allergies her daughter suffers from, as well as her general interest in science.
“One of the units in the undergraduate degree is immunology. Research in this area has resulted in treatments which have made a significant positive change in my daughter’s life. I am looking forward to learning more about it and being able to help others with this knowledge in the future.”
Ms Price said her children and her mother’s strength had inspired her throughout her educational journey. She will be the first in her family to go to university.
Break the chain of poverty
Her tutor Gillian Turner said Ms Price had grown significantly academically and personally as she progressed through the OnTrack course.
“She has spoken often about how difficult it was for her to overcome domestic violence, regain some confidence and how Murdoch University has given her the amazing opportunity to break the chain of poverty with the OnTrack program,” Ms Turner said.
“She demonstrates that no matter your background, you can rise above adversity and education is an integral component that makes that possible.
“Her results have been outstanding, further testament to her commitment and resilience.”
