EGL224: Literature in an Age of Terror

This unit explores a range of literary forms, including fiction, poetry, song, political protest, speechwriting, performance and film, to question how an 'age of terror' comes to be understood as such, and to consider the role literature might play in challenging received ideas and generating new ways of thinking about 'terror'. Particular attention will be paid to the role of readers and the ways texts engage them to reflect on their own understanding of or attempt to escape from terror.
