BIO270: Biochemistry I

An integrated approach to biochemical processes of living cells. Introduction to the major metabolic pathways, enzymology and the mechanisms of protein synthesis. The unit also emphasises biochemical problem solving. Topics: structure and function of membranes; bioenergetics; enzyme kinetics and enzyme inhibition; digestion and absorption; carbohydrate, amino acid, fatty acid and nucleic acid catabolism; oxidative phosphorylation and electron transport; foreign compound metabolism; photosynthesis; carbohydrate, amino acid, fatty acid, purine and pyrimidine biosynthesis; biosynthesis of DNA, RNA and protein; numerical problem solving.

Contact Time

Lectures: 3 hours per week; laboratories/tutorials: 4 hours per week.

Prerequisites

N152/BIO152 Cell Biology and either PEC144 Chemical Principles or M114/PEC114 Chemistry for Biological Sciences or M115/PEC115 Chemistry for Environmental Science or M116/PEC116 Chemistry for Physical Sciences.

Exclusions

Students who have successfully completed V261/BMS261 Human and Comparative Biochemistry or ANS251 Agricultural Biochemistry may not enrol in this unit for credit.
