ANS251: Agricultural Biochemistry

Biochemistry is essential to understanding production, health, and disease in animals. Topics: the conceptual understanding of DNA and RNA, proteins and protein synthesis, enzymes and enzyme action, and intermediary and energy metabolism in the whole animal system; regulation and integration of intermediary and tissue metabolism; digestion and absorption of nutrients and metabolites by herbivores (e.g., sheep, cattle), and omnivores (e.g., pigs) and the subsequent utilisation of these nutrients in the body; photosynthesis and secondary metabolism in crop and cereal biochemistry.

Lectures: 4 hours per week; practicals/problem-based workshops: 4 hours per week.

Prerequisites

Enrolment in Bachelor of Animal Science; BIO152 Cell Biology.

Exclusions

Students who have completed BMS261 Human and Comparative Biochemistry cannot undertake this unit for credit.
