Fashion that doesn’t cost the earth

The drive to bring greater sustainability to the ephemeral world of fashion was showcased at a recent event hosted by Murdoch University’s Launchpad.

Alumnus and co-founder of The Volte, Dr Genevieve Hohnen (shown centre above), joined a diverse panel at the Murdoch University Tavern for an engaging event that examined the ways sustainability was becoming increasingly common in all corners of the industry.


Genevieve’s journey at Murdoch began in 2003, when she studied a Bachelor of Law and Arts and concluded in 2009 when she completed a PhD in Philosophy – Politics.

Although Genevieve’s studies led her to work within the public service sector for many years, she was motivated by the lack of fashion rental choices available for a diverse audience of women, as well as the ‘throw-away culture’ that was prevalent.


“Options were very limited. Most rental companies were marketed to people in their early 20s who are a size 6-10. The moment came when we realised that we had all these wardrobes full of designer clothes and bridesmaids’ dresses, that had only been worn a handful of times, so it made sense to create The Volte. We also were really concerned about the impact of fast fashion on the environment and wanted to offer a way for individuals to make a difference,” said Genevieve.

The Volte was founded by Genevieve and a couple of her friends in 2017 as a fashion rental marketplace connecting borrowers and lenders. Women from all demographics, regardless of size and budget, have access to designer fashion at a fraction of the price. It allows individuals to make money from their fashion ‘investment’ pieces, which otherwise would traditionally only have been worn once or twice.

The Launchpad Sustainable Fashion event began with an insightful panel discussion and Q&A from panel members, Steve Noa (The Merino Polo), Rebecca Rickard (Deadly Denim), Genevieve Hohnen (The Volte) and Jody Freeman (Vinnies WA). 

Discussions covered a range of topics from renewable and biodegradable fashion, to what not to donate to your local op shop, to upcycling fashion. 

Following the panel discussion, Murdoch students stepped forward to showcase some of the panel member’s fashion pieces on the catwalk to a backdrop of great encouragement from peers, staff, and alumni.
