High achieving regional students are encouraged to apply for a scholarship that will help them with their living costs when they move to the city to study at Murdoch University.
The George Alexander Foundation (GAF) is offering six scholarships to the value of $24,000 which successful applicants can use towards the cost of their living and accommodation expenses while in Perth.
Murdoch’s Director of Student Services, Tim Martin, said the scholarships will be awarded to high achieving regional year 12 students and that the scholarship funds are given over a three year period.
“The great thing about this scholarship is that it reduces the pressure on regional students,” Mr Martin said.
“It’s daunting enough leaving friends and family to study at university without the added pressure of financial stress.”
2013 recipient, Luke Phipps from Kununurra, said that the level of freedom the scholarship provides by removing the burden to work long hours is invaluable.
“The support that the Foundation provides extends far beyond the obvious financial benefits. They also organise meetings which really helps when it comes to making friends in an entirely new city,” Luke said.
“All students are from regional areas and so most of them are in the same boat as you and are keen to make new friends.
“If you are living in the student village, chances are others who got the scholarship are as well, so you can quickly expand your social circle making the transition into uni life so much easier.”
Established in 2008 the George Alexander Foundation Rural Accommodation Scholarship Program has provided over $1 million to help regional students gain a tertiary degree.
Applications for the next found of these scholarships will open on October 20. Get more information on the GAF scholarship here.
