How to make the most of Year 12

Teenagers walking on the street

No matter how high school has been so far, Year 12 is the chance for you to wrap it up in the best way possible.

Your high school years are a significant time in your life, and there really is nothing else like it. The hours you put in to study, the friendships you make along the way, and the dreams you form over the years are all important aspects to remember.

Now you’re in Year 12 and high school is coming to an end, there are many things for you to consider. So, whether you’re buzzing with excitement about what’s next or you’re feeling unsure of what to do, take some time to think about how you can make your final year at school your best one yet.

Cut ties with things that hold you back

Make time for things which improve your overall wellbeing. Consider how important it is to take care of your mental and physical health, letting go of toxic friendships or relationships that hold you back. Reassess your path to success – what does that look like, and what you need to do to get there?

Focus on things that interest you. This is an important time to work out what your passions really are so that you can design your ideal future. There’s no point pursuing something if your heart just isn’t in it.

Discover what it is you want to do

If you give everything a go at least once, you can work out what you do and don’t like. Trying new activities and exploring opportunities can help you learn what it is you feel most passionate about – and it’s important to love what you do.

But whether you’ve already worked out what your interests are or you’re still figuring it all out, embracing every opportunity available will help you find – or confirm – what drives you. Explore the possibility of internships, work experience, networking, and even volunteering. You never know where these opportunities could lead you.

Find a balance

Year 12 is a huge year, so you’ll find it easier to study and focus when you look after yourself. Make sure to fuel yourself with good food, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly – it’s the simple things that can make a huge difference.

Of course, there is more to life than study. Activities like hanging out with friends, listening to music, taking a break from your phone, or watching your favourite Netflix show have proven benefits to help you de-stress. Finding a balance between study, socialising, and taking time for yourself will help you feel more rejuvenated, focused, and resilient.

Think differently

You may be one of millions finishing school at the same time, but what you choose to do afterwards is up to you. Think outside the norm and challenge what you think you know, and what you think you should know.

The way you think at uni, work, or elsewhere will be different to high school, and the world is yours to explore. Consider what’s possible beyond the status quo and be curious enough to explore the unknown. Being able to adapt to your surroundings and think for yourself are skills that are valuable beyond any form of education.

You don’t need to start your final year at school with a plan for the rest of your life. Use this time as an opportunity to reflect on your past, adjust if you need to, and discover how to make the most of your future, for yourself.
