Bruno Oliveira has been programming since he was 15 years old, so he knew exactly what he needed from a postgraduate degree. It had to provide a lot of additional value to his already impressive work experience, and he wanted to undertake studies that would challenge him and open many more doors for his career. Postgraduate studies an eye-opener

Bruno has more than 20 years’ experience working in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, a type of software used to manage day-to-day business activities such as accounting, procurement, project management, risk management and compliance, and supply chain operations. The Master of Information Technology degree at Murdoch extended Bruno’s knowledge about data-driven technology in ways he couldn’t have imagined, despite his wealth of experience.

“I am a critical thinker. I like to combine my knowledge in multiple disciplines to come up with unexpected solutions,” Bruno says.

“My Master of IT with a major in Data Science at Murdoch really changed the way that I see the world. The postgraduate Data Science major opened my eyes to all the data that we have around us, and the many new ways to solve business problems with those data.” 

Finding a sense of community at Murdoch

As Bruno began his search for a place to study, he was immediately impressed with Murdoch University.

“I felt embraced and welcomed from my first talk to the receptionist to deciding my major with the academic chair,” Bruno said.

“I was also impressed with the background experience of many professors in my course, which for me is one of the main aspects when deciding who you are going to learn from.

On top of that, the Murdoch campus is fantastic with open spaces, nature and labs with powerful computers available for all students.”

Qualifying for the International Welcome Scholarship (Australia) contributed to Bruno’s opinion that Murdoch was the best place for him to study an IT degree. The scholarship is available to international students who are residents in Australia.

Real-world experience in a supportive learning environment

Bruno enjoyed the opportunity to study full time, believing Murdoch offers the perfect balance between studying and free time to review and absorb the new knowledge he was learning. He was pleasantly surprised to discover how similar his assignments were to the real-world demands of the current marketplace. It gave him confidence knowing what he was learning was going to be valuable to his future career.

Part of the reason Bruno is so confident is because of the dedicated teaching support he received. He found his professors were expert at helping him understand complex topics by using clear language and engaging the students in interactive workshops at Murdoch’s Virtual Centre for Simulation. The instruction went beyond the classroom and included all aspects of project management in the real world.

Gaining competitive advantage as a data-driven professional

According to Bruno, his greatest achievement while studying at Murdoch was becoming a data-driven professional, enhancing his already impressive work experience. He completed his dissertation on Detecting and Visualising Abnormal Road Traffic Conditions in Virtual Reality Using Machine Learning Techniques and was able to work with two companies on the project.

The hard work paid off. At the beginning of the third semester, Bruno was hired by one of the biggest IT consultancy companies in Australia to work as a part-time technical and functional ERP/CRM consultant.

“The new knowledge that I acquired from my Master of IT at Murdoch also enabled me to implement machine learning models for my clients, using their ERP/CRM data.”
