Making the right choices when it comes to setting yourself up for a rewarding career is an important consideration, especially when it comes to pursuing a degree.

Studying at university is a life-changing experience and often requires some support, and a scholarship can play an important role to help fund your career goals and provide the opportunity to focus on a well-rounded university experience.

If you’re a school leaver or have taken a gap year and aspire to create change through technology, engineering or creative design you could be eligible for a Westpac Young Technologist Scholarship. Valued at $15,000 over three years, the scholarship can advance your career goals by helping you gain the skills you need to become a strong leader, and give you access to a network of people with similar goals, interests and aspirations.

2019 recipients are already making the most of their scholarship experience. Through internship and networking opportunities they are striving to become stronger leaders and to one day turn their passion in technology-enabled solutions within engineering and creative design into a successful career when they finish university.

After leaving high school, Computer Science student Mark Snow says receiving the scholarship is the first step towards fulfilling his dreams of pursuing a career in computer science.

“It is also the exposure to a network of experienced and unique technologists, who I am really excited to work with,” says Mark.

Brierley O’Donnell, who also studies Computer Science is passionate about integrating new technologies in society.

“My goal is to work in a field that has something to do with computer science or cyber security. I’d like to help others who want to learn about similar fields, find ways of doing so,” says Brierley.

The Scholarship also supports students who are passionate about innovation and changing the world to build better communities.

Games Technology student Steve Orange says he wants to find a way through virtual reality to help tackle important issues such as drink driving and conservation: “The design and production of video games has been a lifelong passion for me. In learning game design and development, I hope to find a way to connect with a younger demographic.”

Not only has the scholarship program proven to be invaluable with helping Steve develop a drink-driving simulator to educate young people about the dangers of alcohol, he says the scholarship “means an opportunity to graduate debt-free, to expand my networks, to absolutely maximize the learning I can do at university, and to get a springboard into the career of my choice.”

Murdoch is one of five Australian universities to partner with Westpac Scholars Trust to offer the scholarship. This is the second year the University will award the scholarships.
