Flexilab, a new teaching laboratory at Murdoch University’s Perth campus, is transforming the way science subjects are taught.
Murdoch University has completed construction of a new Flexilab – a multi-purpose teaching and preparatory laboratory for students studying science, technology and engineering.
Flexilab leverages digital technology to enhance the learning experience for Murdoch students.
Murdoch’s Chief Operating Officer, Darren McKee, said Flexilab is an example of how Murdoch is designing its campuses to meet the changing needs of students and educators.
“Flexilab is transforming science education. This innovative and interactive space integrates the gold standard of laboratory equipment with the latest imaging and audio technologies,” Mr McKee said.
"The design enables us to rethink the way science subjects are taught and develop engaging new teaching strategies.
“Students enrolled in biology, nursing and engineering units are already utilising the space to great success.”
Flexilab has been designed as one open-plan and collaborative space that can accommodate up to 116 students.
The 375sqm space has the functionality to sub-divide into several smaller spaces. These flexible teaching environments can be adapted to teach a wide variety of subjects and class or group sizes.
Eight directional speakers above each bench ensure an even distribution of sound.
The lab houses ten island benches and two demonstrator stations, all appointed with the state-of-the-art equipment, including vacuum, compressed air and natural gas services.
The new space sets the standard for accessible design. Height adjustable benches and wash down facilities have been provided to better accommodate access for students in wheelchairs. A hearing augmentation system has been installed to help those with a hearing impediment.
A 200sqm preparation area to service the new Flexilab houses a cool room and freezer room, fume cabinet, constant temperature cabinets, drying cabinet, corrosive cabinet, oxidising agent cabinet and flammable liquid cabinets.
The lab will serve as a prototype for future construction of multidisciplinary teaching and learning spaces of its kind across campus.
