Applications close: Friday 17 July 2020

Submission of your idea due: Sunday 6 September 2020.

How it works

Open to all Murdoch University students, #ThinkBig2020 invites entrants to focus their attention on six key, UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using the SDGs as guiding beacons, what local, national or global issues can be tackled through the innovation of your new business idea?

Students can enter as individuals or as a group and are encouraged to work across disciplines. Submissions will be in the form of video presentations and judged by a panel consisting of academics, industry professionals and entrepreneurs. Finalists will be invited to take part in an online final.

UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

There has been no better time to focus on the integration of the SDGs within any organisation, especially for start-ups and SMEs. With unprecedented global health and economic challenges surrounding us, business – arguably one of our greatest resources – is needed to create and deliver sustainable value.

The following goals represent opportunities for creating business ideas and as such, economic and societal value.

  • SDG #3 – Good Health and Well-Being: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
  • SDG #4 – Quality Education: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
  • SDG #8 – Decent work and Economic Growth: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employed and decent work for all.
  • SDG #9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.
  • SDG #10 – Reduced Inequalities: Reduce inequality within and among countries.
  • SDG #11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Business ideas can integrate one or more goal into their central ‘reason for being’ with measurable impact as a key outcome of design.

How we support you

Participants will be provided with a range of online learning resources, that will be available to you from Monday 29 June until Sunday 6 September 2020. These learning materials will be delivered by entrepreneurs, industry and academics and will cover the Lean Canvas Business model which will aid you in developing your idea. There will be a range of pre-recorded and live sessions that can be accessed at your own pace.

  • Lean Canvas Business Model Course
  • Design Thinking Course/Webinar
  • Industry-specific webinars led by industry professionals/entrepreneurs
  • Mentors and Business Coaches
  • Entrepreneur Q&A Sessions

Once participants have developed their idea they will be invited to submit a 6 minute pitch video by Sunday 6 September. This pitch will be judged by an internal panel and finalists will be selected.

Finalists will be invited to the next stage where they will be assigned a mentor to assist with working on their final pitch, taking place in early October.

Finalists will pitch to a panel of judges and an online audience.

The panel of judges will pick an overall winning idea which will be awarded $10,000.

There will also be a people's choice award, voted for by the online audience. The winner will be awarded an industry immersion experience.

Why should you enter?

Think Big is a fantastic opportunity for Murdoch students to learn new skills around the Lean Canvas Business Model and provides the opportunity to explore and develop a concept with business experts, with the real possibility of taking the final product to market.

You’ll build invaluable skills in developing an idea, from identifying a problem to finding a solution and developing a product or service. You’ll learn business model, finance and pitching skills, all of which will be useful in any path of life.

An overall winner will be selected at the final pitches and will be awarded $10,000 cash prize, which can be used to help progress your idea into a business concept.

There will also be a people's choice award, voted for by the online audience. The winner will be awarded an industry immersion experience.
