Workshops

You have the opportunity to select one of each workshop when booking. Please also note that some workshops are repeated, in order to allow for more students to attend them. They are the same workshop, delivered at different times, so please don't sign up for the same workshop twice!

Workshop 1

Criminology - Criminal Profiling

  • The nature of Criminal Profiling is seen throughout popular culture. But what is it really? Is it as simple as the TV shows and movies make it out to be, or is there more science and mathematics behind it? Join us as we look into the basics of profiling, covering concepts like geographic profiling before diving into a still unsolved case and discover who might have done it.

Graphic Design - Design Thinking

  • How do we innovate what we are trying to make? What problems might we encounter? How do we make sure we are making our product better? In this workshop, students will work from the ground up to define, ideate and create a prototype and see where it could go in the real world.

IT - The Internet of Things

  • The Internet of Things is the ever-expanding, network of connected devices found throughout our lives. This network offers amazing possibilities for our future, as well as substantial potential for misuse if security is not handled correctly. During this workshop, students discover how to control devices in Murdoch’s Cybersecurity & Networking labs, using bash scripting on Ubuntu Linux. (No prior scripting knowledge is required!)

Forensic Science - Cold Case Review

  • Do you watch or listen to true crime shows and try to figure out who might have been involved in the crime? Have you ever wanted to know what it's like to solve a case? Are you interested in exploring the job of a forensic investigator? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you might enjoy working with the Cold Case Squad! In this workshop, you’ll use your (new) forensic knowledge and investigative skills to review a murder case, exonerate the wrongly incarcerated and convicted and find the real killer!

Screen Production - Green Screen & Chroma Key

  • The core of many visual effects seen in cinema and on television is the chroma-key. In this workshop, students will learn the technical aspects of creating a good chroma-key environment - including complex aspects of chroma-key lighting, subject positioning, and exposing the shot. The session is held in our TV Studio, which is complete with professional vision switcher and green-screen wall and floor.

Nursing - Save the Avengerz Breakout Box

  • Do you love using logic and knowledge in escape rooms? Join the fun in this nursing-themed workshop, but instead of escaping a room, you're breaking into a Breakout Box! Solve puzzles on patient triage, ECG's, blood gas analysis, x-rays and medication calculations to get your nursing supplies and save the Avengerz from possible doom!

Workshop 2

Law - Mock Trial

  • Witness a group of Murdoch Law undergraduate students practice their skills, as they act as prosecution, defence and judge in a mock trial held at Murdoch’s state-of-the-art electronic Moot Court. Join in, see this courtroom technology in full action, and act as part of the judiciary process to get a hands-on experience in a mock court room.

Business - Save the Business

  • Come along and compete with your fellow attendees as you "Save the Business" and outgrow the competition, with the interactive Murdoch Mad Money activity. Watch your business grow or bust as you experience what it's really like to be a business owner!

Engineering - Microcontrollers & Microgrids

  • Microcontrollers lie at the heart of most modern technology – from cars to microwaves to washing machines. In the last decade, microcontrollers and Systems-on-a-Chip (SoCs), have become accessible to any user with a basic understanding of electronics and coding. In this workshop, students will learn how to assemble and program a simple system featuring LEDs, pushbuttons, and an Arduino-compatible microcontroller. You will also see how microcontrollers are used to develop complex systems, such as our Murdoch Microgrid model town.
    • Enclosed shoes and long hair tied back are required for this workshop.

Laboratory Medicine - Disease & Diagnosis

  • Laboratory Medicine is a key component of modern human (and veterinary) medical practice. Information provided by medical scientists guides the critical decisions made by doctors every day. In this workshop, you will learn more about Laboratory Medicine by undertaking a series of hands-on activities and exploring the fascinating world of disease and diagnosis including histology, bacteria, and haematology.
    • Enclosed shoes and long hair tied back are required for this workshop.

Games Art & Design - Character Animation

  • If you have an interest in gaming and how characters from these games are created, then this workshop is for you! During this session(designed for novices in an easy-to-understand format), you will see how these characters come to life and create your very own 3D animated character.

Sport & Exercise Science - Let's Get Functional

  • In this workshop, students are taken through the Functional Movement Screen, a screening tool used globally to diagnose issues with movement and help correct these. You will complete the same series of exercises as used with patients and learn of the different factors affecting movement (including both genetic and environmental factors) with case studies of the same screening tool being used with people of differing athletic ability – from professional athletes to the elderly.
    • Loose clothing and enclosed shoes are required to complete a range of exercise tasks.

Workshop 3

Forensic Science - Cold Case Review (Please do not select this if you've selected it earlier in the day - it is the same workshop.)

English & Theatre - The Practical & The Potential

  • Come and check out Murdoch University's Nexus Theatre, a 100+ seat theatre with world-class facilities. Enjoy a guided tour of the theatre and get behind-the-scenes access to all the facilities! Following this experience, students will look at several texts through the lenses of both English and Theatre, and how each one offers unique and complimentary interpretations.

IT - The Internet of Things (Please do not select this, if you've selected it earlier in the day - it is the same workshop)

Chiropractic Science - Body Building

  • Do you know the difference between a muscle and a tendon? This workshop will take you through different muscles and tendons as well as bony landmarks. From building a skeleton model to designing muscles and tendons using plasticine, you will learn about yourself and your body. You’ll also draw and label muscles and tendons on other students to understand the variability of the human body.

Entrepreneurship - The Mindset of Innovation

  • Many people look at a problem and come up with a solution that is within the boundaries of their thinking. However, it can be much more interesting and inspiring if we can think outside the box to create new ways of problem solving. In this workshop, we will dive into this further and students will be provided with a simple challenge, with interesting parameters, to produce creative results.

Environment & Global Security - National Security Advisors

  • In this workshop, students will explore the dynamic that environment can have on the security of nations. Students will journey to the fictional country of Paragotria, where natural and man-made disasters have both struck this nation. What has happened? What can be learnt from this? But more importantly, as advisors to the government, what would you suggest this country does to get back on its feet?

Psychology - Psychology Experiments

  • Psychology is fascinating branch of science exploring our minds, how we think and how this shapes our reality. This workshop sees students conduct at least three psychological experiments exploring conformity, fusion and confusion in taste and smell senses, and the psychology of being an eyewitness to a crime. This workshop also dives into the scientific method and how to apply it to psychological experiments.
