Workshops
You have the opportunity to select one of each workshop when booking. Please also note that some workshops are repeated, in order to allow for more students to attend them. They are the same workshop, delivered at different times, so please don't sign up for the same workshop twice!
Workshop 1
Criminology - Forward Profiling
- Join Murdoch University's lecturers to explore the interesting world of criminology, a branch of science involving sociology, psychology and law enforcement. In this workshop, students will explore the following questions - Can we predict criminal behaviours? What are the red flags for potential future offending? How can childhood experiences contribute to future behaviours and what can we do to prevent them?
Graphic Design - Ideation
- Ideation is the design process of developing project concepts using creative methods such as sketching, prototyping, brainstorming and many other thought-provoking strategies. During this workshop, participants will engage in creative techniques for producing bold, innovative ideas that can literally change the world!
IT - The Internet of Things
- The Internet of Things is the ever-expanding, network of connected devices found throughout our lives. This network offers amazing possibilities for our future, as well as substantial potential for misuse if security is not handled correctly. During this workshop, students discover how to control devices in Murdoch’s Cybersecurity & Networking labs, using bash scripting on Ubuntu Linux. (No prior scripting knowledge is required!)
Forensic Science - Cold Case Review
- Do you watch or listen to true crime shows and try to figure out who might have been involved in the crime? Have you ever wanted to know what it's like to solve a case? Are you interested in exploring the job of a forensic investigator? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you might enjoy working with the Cold Case Squad! In this workshop, you’ll use your (new) forensic knowledge and investigative skills to review a murder case, exonerate the wrongly incarcerated and convicted and find the real killer!
Screen Production - Green Screen & Chroma Key
- The core of many visual effects seen in cinema and on television is the chroma-key. In this workshop, students will learn the technical aspects of creating a good chroma-key environment - including complex aspects of chroma-key lighting, subject positioning, and exposing the shot. The session is held in our TV Studio, which is complete with professional vision switcher and green-screen wall and floor.
Nursing - Save the Avengerz Breakout Box
- Do you love using logic and knowledge in escape rooms? Join the fun in this nursing-themed workshop, but instead of escaping a room, you're breaking into a Breakout Box! Solve puzzles on patient triage, ECG's, blood gas analysis, x-rays and medication calculations to get your nursing supplies and save the Avengerz from possible doom!
Environmental Science - Understanding Weather
- Weather knowledge is useful in many different fields, such as environment, marine and agriculture. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to use simple instruments to predict weather and do your own weather forecast.
- Enclosed shoes and long hair tied back are required for this workshop.
Workshop 2
Sound - Podcasting
- Students will create, record and edit a podcast. Using a podcast template and prepared audio materials, the students will conduct and record their own podcast in a dedicated Podcast Studio. Once they have finished their recording, they will be shown basic editing techniques in order to edit and package their podcast.
Law - Mock Trials in our Court Room
- In this workshop, we run through a simple mock trial situation. Students will learn about the onus of prosecution and defense, the types of issues that can and cannot be brought before a jury and the issues and knowledge needed to take part in our legal system. Students will fill the roles of jury members as they watch Murdoch Law students take part in a simulation of a legal trial. Students will also then be asked to pass their verdict on the trial.
Business - Game Theory
- In this fun, interesting and interactive workshop, students will be exposed to the basics of the mathematical model known as Game Theory. This science of logical decision making is an important part of Economics and social sciences. Through interaction and technology, students will learn and gain understanding of concepts of Zero-sum games, The Nash Equilibrium, Homo Economicus and see versions of this theory in popular culture and the real world.
Engineering - Exploring Renewable Energy Engineering
- In this hands-on workshop, students will explore renewable energy engineering with Murdoch University's expert academic and research staff.
- Enclosed shoes and long hair tied back are required for this workshop.
Games Art & Design - Character Animation
- If you have an interest in gaming and how characters from these games are created, then this workshop is for you! During this session(designed for novices in an easy-to-understand format), you will see how these characters come to life and create your very own 3D animated character.
Sports & Exercise Science - Sports Science Olympiad
- Join the Sports & Exercise Science academics in the specialised physiology laboratories and exercise sports functionality and movement in this hands-on workshop.
- Loose clothing and enclosed shoes are required to complete a range of exercise tasks.

The museum features various specimens including equine, bovine, porcine, canine and feline, as well as body systems, such as cardiovascular and nervous systems.
Workshop 3
English & Theatre - The Practical & The Potential
- Come and check out Murdoch University's Nexus Theatre, a 100+ seat theatre with world-class facilities. Enjoy a guided tour of the theatre and get behind-the-scenes access to all the facilities! Entrepreneurship - The Mindset of Innovation
- Many people look at a problem and come up with a solution that is within the boundaries of their thinking. However, it can be much more interesting and inspiring if we can think outside the box to create new ways of problem solving. In this workshop, we will dive into this further and students will be provided with a simple challenge, with interesting parameters, to produce creative results.
Environment & Global Security - National Security Advisors
- In this workshop, students will explore the dynamic that environment can have on the security of nations. Students will journey to the fictional country of Paragotria, where natural and man-made disasters have both struck this nation. What has happened? What can be learnt from this? But more importantly, as advisors to the government, what would you suggest this country does to get back on its feet?
Psychology - Psychological Experiments
- Psychology is fascinating branch of science exploring our minds, how we think and how this shapes our reality. This workshop sees students participate in a series of safe psychological experiments exploring conformity, fusion and confusion in taste and smell senses, and the psychology of being an eyewitness to a crime. This workshop also dives into the scientific method and how to apply it to psychological experiments.
