Senate Medals
The Senate Medal is an award, established in 1997, that recognises
exceptional service to the University by person(s) for
whom other forms of recognition, such as the award of an honorary degree, are
inappropriate.
The Medals are primarily for general staff and members of the community who
have given effective and faithful service to the University. A Medal may
also be awarded to an academic member of staff for activities which would not be
rewarded in promotions, e.g. a staff member who has made a significant
contribution to the development of a sporting club on campus.
The awards will be based on the extent to which the work or achievement of
the nominee(s) reflects excellence beyond the normal call of duty. In
making the awards, emphasis will also be placed on demonstrated excellence, with
specific and concrete examples of achievement.
Up to five Senate Medals may be awarded annually and may be awarded on the basis of one or more of the following criteria:
- Consistently exceptional performance by a member of members of staff in a
work area, or several areas, within the University;
- Significant innovation or demonstrated betterments in university work
practices;
- Effective and faithful service to the University community
- Outstanding contribution to general community services, to the benefit of
the University or on behalf of the University;
- Length of association with the University, together with a significant
contribution to its activities.
