Responsibilities
  1. Senate Medals

Up to five Senate Medals may be awarded annually. One of these awards may be made to a team of two or more nominees.

  1. Objective

The objective of the award is to recognise outstanding service to the University by persons for whom other forms of recognition, such as the award of an honorary degree, are inappropriate, and for whom this service is not open to recognition through the promotions process.

  1. Criteria

Medals will be awarded on the basis of one or more of the following criteria:

(i) consistently outstanding performance by a member or members of staff in a work area, or several areas, within the University;

(ii) significant innovation or demonstrated improvements in university work practices;

(iii) outstanding service to the University community;

(iv) outstanding contribution to general community services, to the benefit of the University or on behalf of the University;

(v) length of association with the University, together with a significant contribution to it.

In general, the awards will be based on the extent to which the work or achievement of the nominee(s) reflects excellence beyond the normal call of duty. Account will be taken of the expectations of the nominee’s normal duties and the extent to which opportunity for innovative and outstanding performance exists.

In making the awards emphasis will be placed on demonstrated excellence, with specific and concrete examples of achievement.

  1. Eligibility

All persons associated with the University are eligible, provided that at the time of nomination this association has extended over a period of at least five years. The Medals are primarily for current or recent general staff, and members of the community, who have given effective and faithful service to the University. The Medals are not just for staff near the end of their careers; they can also be for staff who have made outstanding contributions earlier in their careers.

  1. Nominations

Nominations will be invited in appropriate University publications.

Nominations may be made by members of the Senate, supervisors, colleagues and students. The nomination must be accompanied by a detailed supporting statement, which addresses one or more of the above criteria. The nomination must be supported by a statement from a second person in the categories specified above and other statements of informed support may also be submitted.

There is no limit to the number of nominations that may be made by a particular nominator. However, self-nomination is not acceptable.

  1. Selection

The Medals are awarded by the Honorary Awards and Ceremonial Committee.

  1. Awards

Each award will consist of a commemorative medallion awarded at a Graduation or similar University ceremony.

The names of the awardees will be published in appropriate University publications.
