STP204: Overseas Aid and International Development

Should we help poor people in other countries? How do we know what they want? After decades of Western Aid, why do key development indicators remain so stark? What is the best way to alleviate poverty and bring about sustainable development? What are the major obstacles and opportunities? Explore these challenges and the changing approaches to international aid by government, multilateral organisations and non-government aid agencies. Focus on key issues such as governance, capacity building, and participatory approaches.

Exclusions	Students who have completed STP240/STP440 Special Topics in Sustainable Development: Overseas Aid and International Development in 2005 may not enrol in this unit for credit.
Notes	Students enrolled or intending to enrol in MA, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate courses should enrol in the higher-level code for this unit.
