POL297: Democracy in the 21st Century

Counterterrorism is intended to safeguard democracy and 'our way of life'. This assumes that there is consensus regarding democracy. However democracy and citizenship are contested - both theoretically and in practice. With a particular focus on Australia, this unit explores what democratic citizenship might mean in the twenty-first century. Topics include liberalism, feminist and green critiques, deliberative democracy, civil society, issues of civil liberties and human rights, and citizenship, i.e. who is included and who is excluded from the 'demos'.
