POL257: Authoritarianism and Democracy in Asia

Historically, capitalism and liberal democracy went hand in hand in Europe and North America. Expectations of a similar relationship emerging in Asia have risen due to economic and social transformations in the last two decades. Recent economic crises have also been interpreted as evidence that authoritarian rule is incompatible with sophisticated market economies. Does this underestimate the durability of authoritarian rule? Does political change have to be democratic to accommodate the market and related institutions like the rule of law?
