PHL417: Meaning and Interpretation

This unit deals with central themes in contemporary philosophy of language, in both the analytic and phenomenological traditions. Questions addressed include: How do we make 'sense' of the world? How do we understand others? What counts as a language? Is 'language' necessary to make the world 'meaningful' for us? Can we think without words? What is the relation between thinking, talking and hearing? What is the relation between language and reality? Is it possible to understand what someone else says?
