PHA501: Pharmaceutical Chemistry I (Not available in 2010)

Physicochemical, structural and spatial aspects of organic and inorganic drug chemistry. Gain an understanding of the key chemical attributes that enable medicinal compounds to be absorbed by the body, be transported and distributed around the body, exert a pharmacological effect at the site of action, and finally be metabolised and eliminated from the body. Investigate the chemical stability of drugs, and apply your knowledge of drug chemistry to the separation and identification of drugs for assessment of purity and decomposition.
