PEC317: Physics of Materials

This unit covers the properties of matter and the structure and properties of solids and surfaces and their technological applications. Topics covered include phases of matter, properties of gases, liquids and solids, defects and dislocations in solids, quantum statistics, lattice vibrations, free electron theory of solids, metals, insulators and semiconductors, semiconductor devices, dielectrics, magnetic and amorphous materials, superconductivity, surfaces of solids and liquids.

Contact Time

Lectures: 2 hours per week, tutorials: 1 hour per week, laboratories: four 3-hour sessions.

Prerequisites

PEC140 Introduction to Chemistry or PEC114 Chemistry for Biological Sciences or PEC115 Chemistry for Environmental Science or PEC116 Chemistry for Physical Sciences or PEC144 Chemical Principles, and PEC231 Modern Physics.
Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.

Exclusions

Students may not complete both this unit and PEC247 Physical and Inorganic Chemistry for credit.

Notes

Students wishing to complete a double major in Chemistry and Physics should enrol in either PEC247 or PEC317 Physics of Materials and contact the Academic Chair for advice.
Laboratory kits are provided for off-campus students.
