PEC238: Biological Chemistry

Biological chemistry  encompasses organic chemistry, its application to biological systems and chemistry that occurs within biological systems. Topics include: structure elucidation, stereochemistry, organic chemistry, electron transfer in biological systems. The subject material will be of interest to students in disciplines where understanding of organic and biological chemistry is important. Such disciplines include organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, drug discovery, biological and biomedical sciences, environmental science, forensics, bioprocess engineering, biotechnology and nanoscience.

Murdoch: S2-internal, S2-external

Contact Time

Internal: Lectures: 3 hours per week; laboratories/workshops: up to 4 hours per week for up to 10 weeks.
External: Internet access and compulsory 5-day on-campus laboratory session.
Due to the nature of offering this unit students are recommended to seek

Prerequisites

PEC114 Chemistry for Biological Sciences or PEC116 Chemistry for Physical Sciences or PEC144 Chemical Principles.
Students with good grades in PEC115 Chemistry for Environmental Science may be admitted with the permission of the Unit Coordinator.
Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.
